Two Yorkshire Christmases: Fountains Abbey or the Moors?
Christmas in York is lovely. It is also busy.
The city centre fills with shoppers, lights, market stalls and people trying to walk in opposite directions along the same narrow street. That is fine for an afternoon. But if you have come to Yorkshire for a few days, you may also want to get out into the county and see something a little quieter.
So, for Christmas 2026, we have introduced two new private tours from York.
One takes you towards abbey ruins, a cathedral city and the riverside streets of Knaresborough.
The other heads through Malton and Helmsley before taking you onto the North York Moors, with independent shops, food and winter countryside along the way.
Both are private. Both are for up to four guests. Both give you a properly Yorkshire day out without hiring a car or joining a coach.
The question is simple: which one sounds more like your Christmas?
Tour one: Fountains Abbey, Ripon and Knaresborough

Choose A Very Yorkshire Christmas if you like historic places, impressive architecture and the idea of combining a seasonal attraction with two very different Yorkshire towns.
The route includes:
- Fountains Abbey and its seasonal programme
- Historic Ripon
- Time for lunch
- Knaresborough’s old streets
- The famous view over the River Nidd and viaduct
It is a seven-hour private tour, with collection and return in York. The price is £299 for your private group of up to four guests, not £299 per person.
Fountains Abbey is the main event. The ruined monastery sits within a much larger historic landscape, so you are not simply arriving, taking one photograph and getting back in the vehicle. There is room to explore the site and take in the seasonal atmosphere, subject to the programme and opening arrangements on your chosen date.
Admission to Fountains Abbey is separate. Food, drinks and personal purchases are separate too. We would rather say that clearly now than have you wondering about it later.
After Fountains Abbey, the route continues to Ripon.
Ripon gives you a change of pace. It is a historic cathedral city with a market square, independent places to eat and time to have lunch without trying to squeeze a meal into a ten-minute coach stop. We can talk through what you would like from the stop before the day, then keep the timing sensible around the rest of the route.
The final stop is Knaresborough, where the streets, river setting and viaduct views bring a different kind of Yorkshire character.
This is the better choice if you are drawn to:
- Abbey ruins and heritage
- Historic town centres
- A proper lunch stop
- Seasonal activities at a major site
- Photographs, views and a gentler pace
You are not spending the day chasing every Christmas market in the county. Instead, you are seeing a few places properly.

Tour two: Malton, Helmsley and the North York Moors
Choose Christmas in the Yorkshire Moors if independent shops, local food and winter scenery appeal more than a paid heritage attraction.
This is a six-hour private tour from York, priced at £269 for the whole group of up to four guests.
The route includes:
- Malton’s food shops and independent businesses
- Historic Helmsley
- Hutton-le-Hole
- Winter countryside
- A scenic drive onto the North York Moors
There is no compulsory attraction admission on this tour. You can browse, stop for food, take photographs and enjoy the towns without feeling that you have to fit a particular ticketed experience into the day.
Malton is a natural starting point for this kind of Christmas outing. It is known for food and independent businesses, so it suits you if the best part of a festive day is finding something interesting in a small shop, choosing lunch somewhere local or taking home a few things you would not find in a standard high-street chain.
Then comes Helmsley, with its historic centre and North Yorkshire setting. Depending on your interests and the conditions on the day, there may be time for shops, refreshments or a short wander before we continue towards Hutton-le-Hole and the Moors.
The countryside is a big part of this tour.
You get the change from busy York streets to proper Yorkshire roads, open views and winter landscapes. The weather may be bright, grey, wet or somewhere between the three. That is December in Yorkshire, really. We will plan sensibly around the conditions, but we cannot order blue skies.
This is the better choice if you are drawn to:
- Independent shops and local food
- Market towns
- Village streets and winter scenery
- A scenic drive onto the Moors
- A day without compulsory attraction tickets
You are not being hurried from one large attraction to the next. You are having a look around, stopping where it makes sense and enjoying the journey between places.
Which Christmas tour suits you best?
Still undecided?
Here is the straightforward version.
Choose Fountains Abbey, Ripon and Knaresborough if you want:
- A seven-hour heritage-focused day
- Abbey ruins and a seasonal programme
- A cathedral city and market square
- Time for lunch in Ripon
- Knaresborough’s River Nidd and viaduct views
- A day built around historic places
Choose Malton, Helmsley and the Moors if you want:
- A six-hour countryside escape
- Independent businesses and food shops
- Historic Helmsley
- Hutton-le-Hole and winter scenery
- A scenic drive onto the North York Moors
- No compulsory attraction admission
Neither option is a fixed Christmas market shuttle.
That matters because temporary markets, stalls and special events do not run every day. Some operate only on selected dates. Seasonal opening times can change, and winter weather can affect outdoor plans.
We can build in a market or seasonal event when your chosen date lines up with a confirmed programme. We cannot guarantee that every town will have a Christmas market on every day, and we would rather be honest about that.
What is included on both private tours?

Whichever route you choose, the day is for your group.
Both tours include:
- A private vehicle
- A local driver-guide
- Collection and return in York
- Up to four guests
- Christmas music on board
- A chocolate welcome
- Help coordinating the practical details of the day
We can collect you from your York hotel, accommodation or another agreed York pick-up point.
There are no strangers sharing the vehicle. No coach timetable. No need to hire a car and get used to driving on unfamiliar roads. No pressure to rush through every stop because another group is waiting.
That is the whole point.
If you have read our guide to private Yorkshire tours from York, you will know that a private day still needs a realistic route. It is not a promise to visit twelve places in six hours. It is a sensible plan with room for small adjustments around your interests, the weather, available daylight and how long you want to spend in each place.
Want more time for photographs? Fine.
Want to keep outdoor walking shorter if it is wet? No problem.
Want to stop for lunch rather than treat food as an afterthought? That is what the planning is for.
Why not just use public transport?
You can, of course.
Some Yorkshire day trips work well without a car, especially when one town is your main destination. But rural North Yorkshire becomes more awkward when you want to combine several places in one day.
Fountains Abbey has bus services on selected days and during certain seasons, so you need to check the timetable for your exact date. The same applies to seasonal events and local attractions.
Our guide to the best day trips from York without a car explains where public transport works well and where the connections become a bit of a faff.
A private tour is not automatically the right choice for everyone. If you enjoy planning connections and are happy to build your day around fixed departure times, public transport may suit you.
But if you want Fountains Abbey, Ripon and Knaresborough in one day, or Malton, Helmsley and Hutton-le-Hole without repeatedly checking the next bus, a private vehicle removes a fair bit of hassle.
You see more. You worry less. You use your day properly.
How booking works
These Christmas tours are arranged by request rather than instantly booked online.
That is deliberate.
Seasonal opening times, site closure days, local events, daylight and weather can all affect the best version of the day. When you enquire, send us:
- Your preferred date
- Your party size
- Which tour interests you
- Any particular places or activities you would like to include
We will check availability and the relevant seasonal details before confirming anything.
A Very Yorkshire Christmas is proposed for dates from 28 November to 23 December 2026, excluding Fridays and site closure days. Seasonal activities vary.
The Moors tour is also arranged by request, with markets and special events included only when they are operating on your chosen date.
We cannot promise every date will be free. But if we can make it work, we will.

Two Yorkshire Christmases, one easy choice

The heritage tour is for you if you want abbey ruins, Ripon, Knaresborough and a day shaped around history.
The Moors tour is for you if you want Malton’s food shops, Helmsley, Hutton-le-Hole and winter countryside.
Both give you:
- A private vehicle
- A local driver-guide
- York collection and return
- Space for up to four guests
- Flexible planning within the booked duration
- Christmas music and chocolates on board
- No coach, no strangers and no car-hire faff
Christmas in York is worth enjoying. But you do not have to stay in the city centre for the whole of your visit.
If one of these days sounds like your sort of Christmas, send us your preferred date and party size. We will talk through the practical details and see what we can make work.
Best wishes,
Kes
