The route is:
York → Castle Howard → Helmsley → Rievaulx Abbey → Byland Abbey → York

Why visit Castle Howard from York with two abbeys?
Castle Howard is an obvious highlight. It is one of Yorkshire’s best-known historic estates, with a dramatic house, landscaped grounds, gardens, lakes and a long connection with the Howard family.
But Castle Howard on its own is only part of the story.
Once you leave the estate, the route takes you north through the countryside towards Helmsley and the Rye valley. The character changes from grand house and formal landscape to old roads, open views and the substantial remains of two medieval Cistercian abbeys.
You are not simply visiting three attractions and ticking them off a list.
You are moving through different parts of North Yorkshire and seeing how the landscape, towns and historic buildings fit together. That is the whole point.
What can you see on the tour?
Castle Howard
Your day begins at Castle Howard, a Baroque masterpiece shaped by history and set within the Howardian Hills.
There is plenty to take in, whether your interest is architecture, interiors, gardens, filming locations or simply seeing one of Yorkshire’s most recognisable houses properly. The estate includes the house, gardens and wider grounds, although the amount you explore will depend on the admission option you choose and how you want to use your time.
Castle Howard has also appeared in well-known film and television productions, including Brideshead Revisited and Bridgerton. You may recognise parts of it, but it is rather different standing in front of the building yourself.
Castle Howard admission is not included in our tour price. That is deliberate. You can choose the admission option that suits you instead of paying for something you may not want to use.

Helmsley
From Castle Howard, we continue towards Helmsley.
Helmsley is a small North Yorkshire market town and a natural place to pause during the day. You could use the time for lunch, refreshments or a short wander before heading towards Rievaulx.
No elaborate lunch package. No hurried meal at an inconvenient stop. Just a sensible opportunity to eat and stretch your legs.
Food and drink are not included in the tour price, so you can choose what works for you on the day. If you have a particular preference or dietary requirement, tell us when you enquire and we will do our best to point you in the right direction.
Rievaulx Abbey
Rievaulx Abbey is one of the great historic sites in North Yorkshire.
The ruins sit in a quiet valley below the North York Moors, surrounded by countryside rather than modern development. The scale becomes clear as you walk among the remains of the monastic buildings and look up at the surviving arches and walls.
There is an exhibition and museum at the site, along with information about monastic life and the abbey’s destruction following the suppression of the monasteries. You can also take a break at the café and look out across the valley.
Rievaulx is not somewhere you want to rush through in ten minutes. You need time to look around, take photographs and understand the shape of the place.

Byland Abbey
The final historic stop is Byland Abbey.
Byland was once one of the greatest monasteries in England. Today, the ruins give you a strong sense of the size and ambition of the original building, particularly around the remains of the church and its west front.
It is a different experience from Rievaulx. Rievaulx feels tucked into its valley, while Byland sits in a more open rural setting near the foot of the Hambleton Hills.
Byland is also noted for its early Gothic architecture and its influence on church design in the north. English Heritage describes the abbey as an inspiration for the famous rose window at York Minster.
That gives you a neat connection back to York at the end of the day.
Byland Abbey is open to explore in reasonable daylight hours, and entry is currently free. Conditions and museum access can vary, so it is sensible to check the official Byland Abbey information before your visit.
Is this a good Yorkshire day trip without a car?
Often, yes , but this particular combination is much easier with private transport.
You may be able to piece together public transport and walking routes for individual places. The problem is fitting Castle Howard, Helmsley, Rievaulx Abbey and Byland Abbey into one day without spending a large part of it watching the clock.
These places are not all on one simple town-centre route. Connections can be seasonal, limited or inconvenient for the timings you need. Byland Abbey, in particular, is much easier to visit when you have your own vehicle.
Hiring a car gives you more control, but it also brings its own faff:
- Collecting and returning the car
- Working out unfamiliar rural roads
- Finding parking
- Keeping one person focused on driving
- Checking whether everyone is ready to leave
- Getting back to York without cutting the day short
We get those too.

How flexible is the seven-hour day?
There is a planned route, because a day trip still needs a sensible structure. But the day is not intended to feel like a race.
Within the seven-hour tour, we can usually allow reasonable flexibility for:
- Photographs
- Lunch in Helmsley
- Comfort stops
- A slower visit at one of the main sites
- Shorter visits where you would rather keep moving
- Adjustments around your group’s pace
We cannot make the day longer than seven hours, and traffic or attraction opening times can affect the exact timings. But if you want a little longer at Rievaulx, need time for lunch or would rather not be hurried between stops, it is worth asking.
If we can make it work, we will.
