Haunted Highways
Duration: 7 hours
Total driving time: Approx. 2 hours 30 minutes
Intro
A darker road trip through North Yorkshire, this tour leans into ruined strongholds, lost villages, ancient churches and the ghost stories that still cling to the landscape. It’s less about big coastal mileage and more about eerie atmosphere, local legends and places that feel genuinely haunted. Byland Abbey is especially fitting here: medieval ghost stories were written there around 1400, and Treasurer’s House is one of York’s best-known ghost sites.
Route
York Minster and Treasurer’s House → Helmsley Castle → Byland Abbey → Lastingham → Wharram Percy → Clifford’s Tower → York finish
Itinerary
York Minster and Treasurer’s House
Start in the shadow of the Minster with one of York’s most famous supernatural tales. Treasurer’s House is strongly associated with the sighting of Roman soldiers and remains one of the city’s best-known haunted locations.
Duration: 30 minutes
Drive to Helmsley Castle
Duration: 35 minutes
Helmsley Castle
A dramatic ruined fortress with over 900 years of history, from medieval stronghold to Civil War siege site and romantic ruin. It has exactly the kind of brooding atmosphere this tour needs.

Drive to Byland Abbey
Duration: 15 minutes
Byland Abbey
A beautifully isolated ruin with a darker edge. Byland is linked to a remarkable set of medieval ghost stories written by a monk there, many set in the surrounding lanes, fields and villages.
Duration: 50 minutes
Drive to Lastingham
Duration: 20 minutes
Lastingham
A quieter, more unsettling stop in the moors. The ancient church and crypt give this one a very different feel — less theatrical, more eerie and deeply atmospheric. The site has roots going back to the early medieval period, with the present crypt dating from the Norman rebuilding.

Drive to Wharram Percy
Duration: 35 minutes
Wharram Percy
One of Britain’s best-preserved deserted medieval villages, and easily one of the eeriest landscapes in North Yorkshire. Empty earthworks, ruined church remains and the sheer isolation make this a standout haunted-style stop even before the stories begin.

Drive to Clifford’s Tower
Duration: 45 minutes
Clifford’s Tower
A powerful closing stop back in York, with one of the city’s darkest and most haunting historical associations.
