Haunted Highways
A darker road trip through North Yorkshire, shaped by ruined strongholds, ancient churches, secluded landscapes and the ghost stories that still cling to the region.
Introduction
Haunted Highways is a darker private journey through North Yorkshire, leaning into eerie atmosphere, haunting folklore and places that feel as though they still belong to another age. This is less about covering huge distances and more about atmosphere, ruined sites, lonely roads, strange histories and the legends that have settled deep into the landscape.
From the shadow of York Minster to the quiet edge of Ampleforth, this route is designed for guests who want a more unsettling side of Yorkshire — one shaped by medieval belief, haunting history and landscapes that still seem to hold onto the past. Byland Abbey is especially fitting here, with medieval ghost stories written there around 1400, while Treasurer’s House remains one of York’s most famous supernatural locations.

Itinerary
York Minster and Treasurer’s House
30 minutesBegin in the shadow of York Minster with one of the city’s most famous supernatural tales. Treasurer’s House is strongly associated with the reported sighting of Roman soldiers and remains one of York’s best-known haunted locations. It is the perfect opening to a journey shaped by ghost stories, darker history and atmospheric places.
Helmsley Castle
50 minutesA dramatic ruined fortress with more than 900 years of history, Helmsley Castle has evolved from medieval stronghold to Civil War siege site to romantic ruin. Its broken walls and brooding presence give it exactly the kind of atmosphere this tour demands.
Byland Abbey
50 minutesBeautifully isolated and full of presence, Byland Abbey carries a darker edge than many Yorkshire ruins. It is linked to a remarkable collection of medieval ghost stories written by a monk there, many set in the surrounding lanes, villages and fields. Few places on the route bring history and haunting folklore together so powerfully.
Lastingham
40 minutesQuieter and more unsettling than the larger ruins, Lastingham offers a different kind of eeriness. Its ancient church and crypt create a mood that feels less theatrical and more deeply atmospheric. With roots reaching back to the early medieval period, it is a place that seems to hold its past very close.
Ampleforth
45 minutesSet within a peaceful valley edged by woodland and rising ground, Ampleforth brings a quieter, more brooding mood to the route. The setting feels secluded and reflective, with an old-world character that suits the tone of the tour beautifully. After the more dramatic ruins earlier in the day, this stop adds a gentler but still atmospheric sense of mystery before the journey turns back towards York.
Clifford’s Tower
30 minutesThe route closes back in York at one of the city’s darkest and most haunting historical sites. Rising above the city, Clifford’s Tower brings the day to a powerful close, ending the journey with a place shaped by memory, history and shadow.
